Puccini - Manon Lescaut

Puccini - Manon Lescaut
Classical/Opera | 2 CDs | APE, Nero, none LOG, none CUE | 230+235 MB
Publisher: EMI | 1998 | RapidShare

Performer: Montserrat Caballé, Ian Partridge, Plácido Domingo, Robert Tear, Bernard Dickerson, et al.
Orchestra: Ambrosian Opera Chorus, New Philharmonia Orchestra
Conductor: Bruno Bartoletti, John McCarthy
Composer: Giacomo Puccini

This disc has most of the right ingredients for a classic Manon Lescaut. Plácido Domingo and Montserrat Caballé in their prime were two of the loveliest Puccini voices of the late 20th century. Their Spanish temperaments only aid in conveying the passion in this story of a love that survives unpleasant parents, religious vows, and arrest, and ends without a shred of dignity in the swamps of Louisiana. The main drawback here is that conductor Bruno Bartoletti, for all of his experience, could've given a fresher account of the score and, in general, the whole thing sounds a bit studio bound. However, operatic decisions are made on the basis of voices, and this set has them.

Puccini - Tosca

Puccini - Tosca
Classical/Opera | 2 CDs | APE, none LOG, none CUE | 260+196 MB - MP3 | 320 Kbs | 150+120 MB
Publisher: Philips | 2001 | RapidShare

Though recorded 25 years ago, this is still one of the best performances of Tosca on disc. Montserrat Caballe may not have been the most convincing of Floria Toscas on stage, but here her beautiful voice, intelligent phrasing and wide range of vocal colour, helped no doubt by the sympathetic conducting of Colin Davis, combine to produce a thoroughly believable characterisation. Carreras captivates with his then glorious vocal timbre and impeccable legato line, while Ingvar Wixell's Scarpia is both powerful and subtle. Supporting roles are well cast and characterised, with the young Samuel Ramey a strong Angelotti. Colin Davis conducts an exciting performance. But even more desirable are Callas, di Stefano and the incomparable Tito Gobbi under the dramatically forceful Victor de Sabata.
